Property Taxes/LGA Message
The Legislature should increase Local Government Aid funding by at least $90 million this year to provide property tax relief to taxpayers in cities throughout Minnesota. While LGA is a critical part of our state’s property tax relief system, it has been underfunded since 2003 when the Legislature reduced its funding by $150 million. Last year, the Legislature voted to restore $70 million in lost funding to the LGA program, but the appropriation was vetoed by the governor. As a result, property taxes spiked up, and many cities were forced to cut services.

Impact on LGA from the proposed Mall of America expansion using the fiscal disparities. This run assumes that the expansion of the Mall of America would be the same with or without public funding. This is disputed by mall expansion supporters which say that without public funding the mall will be considerable smaller and thus provide a smaller tax base and therefore shift less LGA to Greater MN.
